hats off to Jon Stewart

February 24, 2008 1 comment

My wife keeps calling me in to watch different Oscar moments and a few minutes ago I watched as Glen Haspard and Marketa Irglova won best song for the amazing “Falling Slowly” from the incredible film “Once”. The obvious shock and joy on their faces was beautiful to see. Haspard got to say his thanks, but the orchestra started to play before Marketa got to say anything. So back to work I go when my wife comes back in to say “you have to see this”. I walk in to Jon Stewart reintroducing Marketa and giving her the mic to say her thanks. A made for TV moment to be sure, but it seems like Stewart was pretty taken with the song and the pair. I look for them to show up on The Daily Show in the next week or two.

Here’s the moment.

If you haven’t heard the song – you should. Enjoy.

geek joy – the library book sale!

February 24, 2008 Leave a comment

There are a number of major holidays on my calendar. Christmas, Easter, birthdays, anniversaries, and the annual Metro Library System Friends of the Library Book Sale. No, Hallmark has not yet developed a card, but the observance of this event is as non-negotiable for me as the Humphreys family Easter gathering. Imagine hundreds of the the kind of folks you would imagine attend things like library books sales descending on a building at Fair Park to sort through thousands of donated copies of the Left Behind series to find books they don’t need, may not even really want, but have to buy because they (I) can. How can you not at $.50 for a paperback and $1 for a hardback? So I went, I saw, I purchased. Only seventeen books this year. For a grand total of $19.50 (some were from the “collectors” area – which just means they were in good enough shape to charge more than a dollar for them).

Among the discoveries from the excursion:

A cool edition of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Last of the Mohicans

Stranger in a Strange Land

Dostoyevsky’s The Idiot

A nice copy of The Sound and the Fury

The Reluctant Fundamentalist

The Human Stain

The Great Gatsby

And many more (nine more to be precise).

The glow of the book sale takes away some of the sting of the spanking that was handed to OU today. Some of it.

death threat elmo – the weekly whah?!?

February 22, 2008 Leave a comment

I have always been a bit suspicious of Elmo. Since way back in the “tickle me” days.  The video below is a news report of an Elmo gone bad that now says “kill James” to its two year old owner. I wonder if this is how Chuckie got started.

wildest basketball game I’ve ever seen live – Sooners win!

February 20, 2008 Leave a comment

Thanks to original posters for the video. That’s the most fun I’ve had watching basketball in a long time.

A 4 point play with 10 seconds to go and then a guy misses two free throws at the other end. Unreal. It will take days to get my voice back. But completely worth it.

If you have no idea what I’m talking about, click here for a recap.

top five documentaries that will (should) infuriate you

February 10, 2008 Leave a comment

Over the last couple of years, I have really gotten into documentaries. After watching Maxed Out the other night, I got to thinking about the documentaries that have most struck a nerve with me.

Maxed Out –  On predatory lending and the credit / debt crisis in America.  (good review here)

Who Killed the Electric Car? –  On the different players involved in shutting down the growth of electric cars in the late 90’s.

Jesus Camp –  This is absolute abuse.

Sicko – On the American health care system and other around the world.

Wal-Mart: the High Cost of Low Prices – This one may just set me off because of my feelings towards WM.

jim wallis on the daily show – quote of the moment

February 9, 2008 1 comment

Great interview with Jim Wallis on The A Daily Show. It is always amazing to me how Jon Stewart backs off people like Wallis and just listens. The quote this time is the entire interview – enjoy. If the video doesn’t work, click here to view it on the site.
